Let's talk about jirai kei! Jirai kei translates to "landmine style" in Japanese. Jirai or landmine is a derogatory term in Japanese used to refer to mentally unstable girls, as one must tread lightly. The term has a history associated with addiction to substances like nicotine and caffeine, adult work, and of course, mental illness. While dark themes are still associated, the term now mostly refers to a specific fashion style most well known for high-waisted skirts paired with frilly blouses and chunky shoes. Those who wear the style also are known for participating in oshi katsu, or idol activities in English. Jirai girls also often put stickers over their face in videos or pictures when they want the focus to remain on their outfit rather than their face or makeup.
I have been drawn to the style by the combination of cuteness and morbid themes. Lemoncore is built on the same concept, so I can't help but fall in love! Characters I love make me feel human. Here is one of my jirai outfits, and one of my oshi katsu crafts!! My idol is Marin-chan, of course!
